Winterton is the closest town (some say village) to Champagne Castle Hotel. It was founded in 1905 as Springfield when the Natal government built a weir across the Little Tugela River. This typical pioneer settlement offers a very relaxed atmosphere. It serves the large community of maize, wheat and beef farmers, and in 2013 it was voted Kwazulu Natal’s best town to visit.
The town is situated on the R74 between Bergville and the N3, as well as the R600 between Ladysmith and the Central Drakensberg. Winterton serves as an entry point to the Champagne Valley.
